FAQs

Why is Planning for a Changing Climate Important to MDOT MTA?
Due to increased frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, MDOT MTA is taking initiatives to adapt our systems to make them more resilient to changing climate conditions.
The Climate Change Vulnerability Study and subsequent data analyses identified vulnerable assets in all modes/divisions within MDOT MTA.

What is Involved with Incorporating Adaptation and Resiliency at MDOT MTA?
-
Integrating MDOT MTA's Asset Management
MDOT MTA's Transit Asset Management (TAM) program prioritizes funding based on the condition of transit assets in order to achieve or maintain transit networks in a State of Good Repair (SGR). The TAM program applies to all modes of service and will be managed by the Office of Planning and Capital Programming.
Resiliency is identified in the MDOT MTA's Transit Asset Management Plan as a key vision element in order to achieve the objectives of increasing reliability; availability of on-time performance; mitigate natural and man-made risks, and decrease post-incident recovery time.

TAMbassadors serve as primary liaison between the departments and the Asset Management Division. They are in charge of educating colleagues on the nature of asset management and its benefits; provide QA/QC on asset management data related to a specific department; review and shape development of asset management policies, projects, procedures, etc.; recommend actions to improve MTA’s asset management system.

-
Identifying Appropriate Adaptation and Resiliency Measures
MDOT MTA's capacity to adapt to the impacts of extreme weather conditions is dependent on its ability to respond to the physical needs of the system and to plan for future conditions. Developing a comprehensive database of potential adaptation measures implemented at the asset level assists designers, planners, engineers, and maintenance staff with the resources needed to establish a proactive approach to a changing climate.

What is the differences between Sustainability and Resiliency?
MDOT MTA developed and manages the Transit Roots: Sustainability Program to continuously enhance its world-class transit service and help balance the needs of a community’s quality of life, environmental health, and a robust economy. The Sustainability Program’s purpose is to support and implement the MDOT Policy Manual Supporting Document 606.4, which identifies a vision and goals for a sustainable multimodal transportation system.

While sustainability looks at how current generations can meet their needs without compromising that ability for future generations, resilience considers a system's ability to prepare for threats, absorb impacts, and recover and adapt after disruptive events.
